When I was a kid, one of the first things I learned to memorize was my phone number in case I got lost or abducted by aliens. Not only did I memorize my phone number, but I also had to memorize my cousin’s phone numbers in New York because theirs started with letters, not numbers… huh?
Between 1930 and 1960, phone numbers were alphanumeric, meaning they consisted of both letters and numerals. This 2-letter, 5-number system identified the region of the phone number. These names (or exchanges) were often based on local landmarks, neighborhoods, or districts, making them more memorable and intuitive for residents. Generations didn’t exactly forget alphanumeric dialing; rather, the system phased out as technology evolved, with the switch from rotary dials to touch-tone keypads in the 60/70’s, gradually shifting memory from letter-to-number translation. This urban map of Westchester County highlights one such cousin’s phone number in her hometown of New Rochelle, New York!
TASTING NOTES:
Another fantastic vintage, the 2025 Napa Valley Pinot Grigio is filled with complex flavors and aromas that erupt in the glass. Light and bright with zesty acidity and notes of almond, white peach, and mango. A crisp and refreshing wine that will sit confidently at the Head of your Table!
